Important Update – re Age Groups
As of 1st April 2026 – England Athletics are changing the age groups for athletics across the United Kingdom.
The ESAA has now carried out and completed a review as to how these Age Group changes will impact on Schools Athletics resulting in the following
– FOR 2026, ALL AGE GROUPS WILL REMAIN THE SAME AS THEY ARE AT PRESENT (as set below)
The Age Groups stated below, are the age groups for ALL Hertfordshire Schools and English Schools, Athletics and Cross Country Championships. (for 2026 and for events up until 1st January 2027)
Primary Girls & Boys (Hertfordshire County Championships only)
Year 6 at Primary School
Pre Junior Girls & Boys (Hertfordshire County Championships only)
Year 7 students at Secondary School
Junior Girls & Junior Boys
Thirteen years and under fifteen years of age on 31st August at the end of the current school year
Intermediate Girls & Intermediate Boys
Fifteen years and under seventeen years of age on 31st August at the end of the current school year
Senior Girls & Senior Boys
Seventeen years and under nineteen years of age on 31st August at the end of the current school year
– From 1st January 2027 (Provisionally – the New Age Groups are set out below)
Primary Girls & Boys (Hertfordshire County Championships only)
Year 6 at Primary School
Junior Girls & Junior Boys
Twelve years and under fourteen years of age on 31st August at the end of the current school year
Intermediate Girls & Intermediate Boys
Fourteen years and under sixteen years of age on 31st August at the end of the current school year
Senior Girls & Senior Boys
Sixteen years and under eighteen years of age on 31st August at the end of the current school year
